African may have lost one of her most illustrious sons and anti hero yesterday. The passing of Robert Mugabe, last of dying breed, has shocked the world.
The former president of Zimbabwe ruled for close to four decades before been overthrown by a coup. Mugabe, an avid reader and philosopher, was notorious for his controversial remarks. At a time, he was considered on of the brightest minds on the continent.
Here are some of his most thought provoking quotes.
“Only God who appointed me will remove me — not the MDC (opposition), not the British.” – 2008
“I have died many times – that’s where I have beaten Christ. Christ died once and resurrected once.” – To state radio on his 88th birthday
“You are now our enemies because you really have behaved as enemies of Zimbabwe. We are full of anger. Our entire community is angry and that is why we now have the war veterans seizing land.” – 2000
“Our party must continue to strike fear in the heart of the white man, our real enemy.” – 2002
“I am still the Hitler of the time. This Hitler has only one objective: justice for his people, sovereignty for his people, recognition of the independence of his people and their rights over their resources. If that is Hitler, then let me be Hitler tenfold. Ten times, that is what we stand for.” – State funeral of a cabinet minister, 2003
I asked one ANC Minister how come the whites have been left with so much power, and he said it was because of your friend Mandela. That was an ANC Minister who was saying that. Mandela went too far in doing good to the non-black communities, really in some cases at the expense of (blacks)… That’s being too saintly, too good.” – 2003
“Some are saying ‘Mr Mugabe is old, so he should step down’… No! When my time comes, I will tell you.” – 2014
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
